Nasserpuria Memon Jamat Canada

Presidents Report 2009

March 29, 2009

All praise is for Allah subahana hu wataallah, the most beneficent the most merciful and blessings be on our Prophet Muhamad sallallaahu alay wasalaam. It has been a year and a half since this committee took overfrom our elders. My thanks to our elders who stood on guard for thee during the few months before this committee took over. May Allah (s.w.t) reward them all abundantly for their efforts. Ameen. Alhamdullillah, I am pleased to mention that the current managing committee continues with the task of building the Jamat and has taken some creative and bold initiatives that will enhance the position of our members individually as well as collectively. Balancing between our culture and traditions with the praxis of life in our new homeland, the committee has particularly focused on our youth and our women. Our youth are our future and our women are amongst the most productive and so to enhance these ideals, two separate committees focusing on the said groups were formed, which have produced positive results. Our youth committee in particular has taken creative initiatives and successfully organized events for the first time ever. A ski trip , volunteering for the hot soup days, skating and visit to the Science Centre have involved all members of the Jamat. Imagine Nasserpuria Memons going on these events together. Another youth initiative has been the formation of the “Young Journalism Club” by the Media and Communications Committee. This is another conscious effort by our Jamat to prepare our youth to face the challenges of the media blitz that we face daily.

The challenges of living in a new country are enormous and the consequences infinite but it is only through a combined effort that we will be able to overcome them successfully. The managing committee recognizes that Education will play a key role in this endeavor. In its effort to prepare and encourage our youth for a future of excellence, the managing committee has taken the bold and historic step to create scholarships for all our youth who complete secondary education and embark on a post secondary education. It is my hope that this gesture will encourage all our youth here in Canada to have some sort of post secondary education and acquire knowledge that will equip them with the right skills and position them well to face the realities of the world.

For most of us we are the first generation here and have had to go through difficult times in this new homeland of ours. Alhamdullillah we are blessed with a country that has lots of abundance. We can either enjoy these benefits for ourselves or strive further to make it better for ourselves and easier for our children. The challenges are also enormous. It also is a matter of survival in the future for us as Muslims. Once again the Jamat has been proactively conscious of these challenges and has formed a development committee with a mission to develop a “Vision 20/20.” This will Inshallah encompass a long term goal that will include individual as well as collective aspects of our lives. It is said in this part of the world that there are two certainties of life, taxes and death. As death is incumbent on each and every one of us, jawan or old does not matter. Our Community Affairs committee has formed a Ghusl committee. This committee is looking into a long term scheme to address the exorbitant costs faced by the families at the time of death in the family

We are not only concerned about ourselves. The managing committee has also thought about our youth and our brethren outside of Canada. We have organized the first world Nasserpuria Memon Essay Competition and formed Immigration committee. I am please to announce that the immigration committee is not only guiding individuals on the immigration process but will inshallah will be organizing for the first time ever, a seminar in Mombasa, in conjunction with the Nasserpuria Memon Jamats of Mombasa and Nairobi, for our youth. The seminar will be on education and immigration prospects in Canada.

One suggestion from the general body during the past AGM was for us to review the constitution. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the first constitution committee for giving us a document that has guided us to this day and helped us setup a strong foundation. Alhamdulillah, the managing committee has formed a constitutional review board to look into and see how we could further strengthen ourselves for the future. I would like to request members if they have any suggestions to approach the constitution review board and give their suggestions.

The managing committee has embarked on a vigorous mission to collect outstanding dues. Brothers and Sisters yes we volunteer enormous amount of time in running of the Jamat. However we need finances as well and so it is my request to please pay up your dues and contribute further for the benefit of our Jamat, our family. All members will be handed individual statements. I would like to request all members to clear all their dues.

The managing committee and all the respective sub committees, Community Affairs, Education and Health, Immigration and Settlement, Ladies, Youth, Development, Volunteers, Media and Publication and Sports, continue to have elaborate plans for the Jamat. My thanks to all members for their support. All this effort is lillah and Inshallah we will get the benefits both here and in the hereafter. If we are to survive as a Jamat and as Muslims it will need the effort of each one of us to put our resources together to be successful. United we will prosper and together we will build inshallah.

Jazakallah ul khairan.
